Jacqueline Bozon Dutch, b. 1966

"Viva la Vida!"

Jacqueline Bozon (1966, NL) grew up in Helmond, and nowadays she still lives and works in Den Haag. In her youth she liked to draw a lot, but a career in art was not encouraged from home. Becoming an artist is out of the question for her, because according to her father "there is no future in that". So instead of art school, Bozon studied teacher education, which she successfully completed in 1988. And although she enjoyed teaching, the desire for art remained with her. She starts with murals in children's rooms, and at home she paints her emotions on canvas. She becomes more and more enthusiastic and teaches herself all kinds of techniques. To further develop her technique, she attends the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. In 2003, she takes a year of unpaid leave to devote herself to painting. After 17 years of teaching and graduating from the Academy in 2005,  she fully dedicated her life to art.

During her travels Bozon becomes enormously inspired by different cultures and her life experiences give her her own unique perspective on life, which she reflects in her canvases. Her work is a new generation of traces, lifelines and emotions.

Jacqueline Bozon's most recent series "Ibiza" originates on this Spanish island where people live and let live. Ibiza: a fascinating mix of different people, garishly dressed hippies, the turquoise sea with silver waves, white-brown beaches and majestic rocks, blue skies, the smell of oranges, olives and oleander, flaming sunsets and music. All these elements Jacqueline merges into a colorful interplay of lines in which to travel. The interplay of lines which for Bozon are the paths of life, the paths in life. "Each path is different", just like every step you take in life. At the same time, the harmony of island life is also reflected in the colors and lines on the canvas. Over that, Bozon applies a layer of resin to enhance the colors and to give the canvas the glossy look that Ibiza has for many people.  But if you really want to delve into the nature and culture of the island, you have to look through that layer and get to the heart of the islanders. Because "Only if you search, you will find!".

Artist Statement

"Painting, for me, is entering into a dialogue between myself and the materials I work with. It is searching by feeling, undertaking an adventurous trek. Weighing, deducting, and adding, painting layer upon layer and nuancing again. I am an emotional person and while creating I am guided by my subconscious."

 ...

"I work with acrylic and oil paint, lead, plaster, handmade paper from Nepal, silver foil, sand, natural pigments and resin. I consciously incorporate the sand of mother earth from different countries and cultures into my canvases. All sorts of things grow, flourish and live on this and there are stories attached to it."

 ...

"There is nothing more beautiful than dwelling on the beauty of different countries and cultures around us. The signs, lines and symbols you see in my canvases want to tell something: they refer to past life experiences or towards the future. It is my way to bring the viewer beyond the surface of the canvas, to make them look beyond the obvious."
